Strange & Peculiar Playing Cards

Dr. Henry Baxter (1821–1897) was a physician whose legacy outlived his reputation. Though declared dead at 76, Baxter appeared decades younger, and his sudden disappearance left behind only a fire—and a small iron safe recovered from the ruins of his estate. Inside was a meticulous dossier documenting his lifelong “associates”: beings that appeared part human, part animal, each with distinct personalities, rivalries, and roles in Baxter’s private world.

These playing cards are drawn from that recovered archive. Each character—Mr. Leon, Mr. Trunks, Mr. Ocean, and others represents one of Baxter’s strange companions, preserved through illustration and symbolism. Designed for collectors, performers, and those drawn to unusual lore, Strange & Peculiar is less a deck and more a relic: a glimpse into a mystery that was never solved, and a collection that suggests Baxter may not have been alone… or entirely human.
